Since it's beginning in 1996 A Sorrowful Dream brings a different sound, always close  to the goth/doom style of music. Lately, the band has been incorporating other elements to it, like death/black metal and classical music. During its existance the band has passed through many different formations, each one with its own particularities.

Inicially formed by Dirnei (bass), Éder (clean and extreme vocals), Jorge (drums), Lucas (guitars), Marja (female vocals), Rafael (guitars/ extreme backing vocals ) and Tiago (keyboards), A Sorrowful Dream recorded "The Echo of Your Cry", their first demo, containing five tracks. 

Two years later came a promo tape, with 3 brand new songs, and a single called 'The Fall and he paradise' , presenting new female vocals - Vary - and a new drummer - Rodrigo. In 2001 by the entrance of a new male vocal - Clark - the single "desire" was recorded.

 
Since then the band has passed through deep changes and has recorded 'A Garden of Stones' in December 2003 without female vocals. The line-up was Clark (clean/ extreme vocals), Jô(guitars), Lucas(guitars/violin), Márcio C.(drums), Márcio L.(bass) and Mary(keyboards). By the entrance of a new female vocal, Josie, in 2004, it was released 'In Your Dry Lips' in which there were the same songs from the last demo now including female vocals.

In 2005 the band reappears after six months with a new line-up which is: Éder (leading once again the clean/ extreme vocals), Josie(female vocals), Jô(guitars), Mano(drums), Mary(keyboards), Tuko(bass) and Lucas (guitars/violin), the only one who remains from the first phase of the band.
